Summer at Chestnut Run Farm
Our Asian pear orchards contain mature, healthy trees. The deep roots of these trees bring nutrients up from the soil, resulting in the large, tasty fruit we use to make our flavorful wines. The orchards are beautiful in their deep green summer foliage. We maintain sod on the orchard floor between the rows to resist erosion and to enable us to work in the orchards even after heavy rains. This is all part of our environmentally-friendly approach to farming. We grow our apples on trellis in a system called espalier. Grown this way, the apple orchards look more like grape vineyards, which is fitting since all this fruit goes into our wine. The winery is the shorter barn of the two seen in the above photo, with the thermal solar collector on the roof. Practicing a green philosophy, we use solar heat in the winery and use solar panels on the roof of another of the farm's buildings to produce all of the electricity we use. The pear orchards can be seen beyond the winery, past the end of the rows of trellis.
